(Mankato, MN)--The Mankato MoonDogs Baseball Club, a member of the Northwoods League, is proud to announce the signing of two new players for 2008. The freshman duo of Travis Smith and Kolby Wood, both of the University of Michigan, have committed to play for the MoonDogs this summer.

Smith, a 6’5” 200 lb. freshman, has pitched in 13 games (8 starts) this season for the first-place Wolverines (35-11, 20-4 Big Ten). With a blazing low 90’s fastball, Smith has the ability to take over games and has compiled a 4-1 record in 37.1 innings pitched with 24 strikeouts. His solid pitching numbers have also helped the Wolverines rank twentieth in Baseball America’s Top 25 Poll.

While playing his senior year for Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas, Smith went 6-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 85 strikouts in 75 innings. He also played first base when he wasn’t pitching, hitting .320 with three home runs and 35 RBI. During his junior season, he was ranked number 204 in the Perfect Game Top 300 Prospects list.

Wood, a 6’6” 200 lb. freshman, has been excellent for the Wolverines this season as well. With opponents hitting just .161 against him, Wood has become a reliable arm either as a starter (3 games started) or a reliever (4 appearances). Currently, he sits with a 2-0 record and a 2.08 ERA in 17.1 innings.

Wood had a phenomenal senior season while playing for Berrien Springs High School in Eau Claire, Michigan. He went 7-3 with a 1.20 ERA in 55 innings. He recorded 94 strikeouts with his high 80’s fastball. This helped Wood be named to the All-State team for a second time (’05-’06, ’06-’07) and get drafted in the 44th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2007 draft.

“Both Travis and Kolby come from a tremendous program and one that consistently ranks in the Top 25 in the nation,” said MoonDogs field manager Jason Nell. “They both bring great control and command of an array of pitches and can dominate the opposition at any given time. We hope both of them can come into Mankato and be a key part of our starting rotation this season.”

The MoonDogs Home Opener is set for Friday, May 30 against the Rochester Honkers at 7:05 PM. Single game tickets will go on sale Saturday, May 10 at 10:00 AM. To be part of all the MoonDogs action this summer, season tickets are on sale now as well as group and hospitality tickets.
